Previously working as a Residential Behavioral Health Supervisor for a nonprofit in the Denver area and a therapist in two community correctional erie jobs, Richardson is passionate about mental health and justice.
Now, her career has brought her to the town of Erie. Richardson was recently hired as a co-responder for Boulder County and is working closely with the Erie Police Department. In this position, Richardson will introduce mental health expertise during law enforcement encounters to reduce arrests and hospitalization, and decrease the distress caused to community members during these incidents. Her first day as co-responder was May 17. I think a lot of people don’t have the tools or even the knowledge of mental health and that’s why it’s so important to address.
According to a news release, co-responders receive extensive training in mental health, substance intoxication and treatment, crisis intervention, verbal de-escalation, crisis case management, tactical empathy and more. Working as a team, law enforcement and a co-responder arrive together on calls for service which may involve mental health, substance use, death of a loved one or another type of crisis. What signs are you looking for to really understand what this person is going through and how can you best help them? It’s being able to look at a person and recognize they’re only doing this crime because they’re struggling with an addiction. So, instead of charging them, let’s help them, let’s get them clean and sober ideally, or more stable however we can and then help prevent them from committing more crimes or continuing to use if we can. Ultimately, it’s how we can make the community a safer and better place together.
Richardson is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Addiction Counselor, the release said. She received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Simpson College and a master’s degree in counseling from Colorado Christian University. Richardson has also has experience working with multiple organizations that fight human trafficking and assist survivors through prevention, intervention and restoration efforts. Erie Police Chief Kim Stewart wrote in an email. She is self-motivated and has tons of knowledge, skills, and abilities in this realm to include supervisory experience. Stewart wrote that the request for a co-responder for the Erie Police Department was made by a nine-member community task force, empaneled by the town board in August last year. She wrote that task force members reviewed the police department’s directives and recognized that many of the issues that law enforcement deals with involve mental illness and substance abuse. The co-responder request was passed by the town board unanimously. Helping create connections and collaborating with other helping professionals is great.
